Crystal Bridges Museum exhibition news

We’re pleased to announce that exhibition planning details have now been finalized for State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now and you may share the news of your inclusion. The following email contains information designed to help you with this process.

About State of the Art:

September 13, 2014 – January 19, 2015

This link to the museum’s website offers exhibition details and can be widely shared: http://crystalbridges.org/ exhibitions/stateoftheart/

Some key points for your information or sharing:

  • The exhibition features 102 artists from across the country, selected for inclusion as a result of Crystal Bridges president Don Bacigalupi and assistant curator Chad Alligood’s travels and visits (mostly in person, some via Skype) with artists from every region of the U.S.
  • Works in the exhibition include photography, video, ceramics, action/interaction, glass, fiber, installation, paper, painting, and sculpture.
  •  There are more than 200 total works in the exhibition
  •  The exhibition will reach beyond the boundaries of the Museum’s temporary exhibition spaces, extending into the permanent collection galleries and activating public and community areas indoors and out. Gallery spaces will total 19,000 square feet.
  • There will be no charge to view the exhibition. Media Efforts:

Next week, we’ll be sharing a press release with you which will offer details to the media about the exhibition planning progress. This release will be sent to national media as well as key media contacts in your region. In that communication, we’ll also include a press release template and notes on how you can share the release with your key contacts to further publicize your involvement. (Please do not begin contacting media until we send this release and template to you next week).

When the exhibition opens, we will debut a State of the Art website, with information on all 102 artists. Prior to this website, we will not be releasing a full checklist of artists. Rather, in order to respect each artist’s preferences for publicity, we’ll provide artist names upon request to select media, will work with media on regional listings of artists, and accommodate interest/requests by connecting you with key media.

Social Media:

We’ll be sharing news about the exhibition using the hashtag #StateoftheArt on our social media platforms:

We encourage you to follow us on social media and share news about #StateoftheArt as well. As we see your posts, we’ll share/retweet/follow too. In future communications, we’ll provide you with exhibition visuals you can share on social media, in newsletters, etc.

You can follow the exhibition on our Huffington Post and Crystal Bridges blogs. We’re also looking for guest bloggers from among the artists presented in the exhibition. Would you like to contribute a post about your experience with Don/Chad’s visit, the exhibition concept, your work being featured or other topics? Just email me your interest and we’ll connect with you to participate.

Exhibition Catalog and other Communications Materials:

Our team has developed a unique exhibition catalog comprising a box with 110 die-cut, interlocking cards as well as a 48-page book. The cards feature each exhibition artist and can be used to build and curate mini exhibitions, play art-based memory or card games, and more. Thank you for sending your photos and information that made it possible for us to complete the design and send this catalog off to press. We look forward to providing you with a complimentary copy during the exhibition.

In addition to the website and catalog, we’ll be developing interactive materials for the galleries, printed brochures, and an audio guide/downloadable app. We’ll share a link to the State of the Art app when it’s available. (If you haven’t downloaded our free Crystal Bridges app yet, you can access it through iTunes: http://crystalbridges.org/media/digital-resources/)

Attending the exhibition:

You should have received via email a Save-the-Date invitation to the private opening and exhibition preview on Thursday, Sept. 11. We welcome you and your guest(s) to attend, and will send an invitation in the next month. We do hope your family and/or close friends can come enjoy this special evening with you, and we appreciate your understanding that this is a private event, by invitation only.

We will also host a media preview on the morning of Sept. 11 as well as a separate event for museum colleagues, gallery contacts, and other friends who were instrumental in the research phase of the exhibition; we’ll be connecting with these groups individually.

Thank you for your support and assistance as we prepare for the debut of this exciting exhibition. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. We look forward to working with you and to meeting you in the near future.

Best regards,

Diane

Hi Melanie,

I’m in England and just spoke to my husband who said he hasn’t heard from The shipping company yet about when they will collect my artworks this week. You had said they would call last Friday. I just wanted to let you know in case there is some kind of hiccup.

Thank you!

All the best,

Lenka

Just called the office. The pick-up will be on Friday between 8 – 10 a.m. They should call in the next day or so. Let me know if there are any issues.

Hi Lenka,

Does your husband have an email address? The shipping company has called a lot today and no answer. They would like to come pick up the work tomorrow (Thursday) between 8 – 10am. Please pass on the information to him and let me know if he knows or if there are issues.

Hello all,

This morning, the press release I mentioned to you was sent to our national media list. We shared it with Randy Kennedy of The New York Times last evening, who posted about it online in the Arts Beat blog, and it will be in tomorrow’s print edition. You can read it online here.

We’re beginning our follow-up with media contacts and sharing artist’s names on a regional basis; some media contacts may connect with you directly for responses or to schedule interviews. We will be happy to coordinate this for you if preferred, or you are free to respond directly.

After we respond to this wave of publicity, we’ll be back in touch with a news update and a press release template that you can use for local publicly.

As always, let me know if you have any questions. We hope to be a helpful resource for you–

Best,

Diane

Hi Guys,

So actually the pick-up will be the week of August 4th not July 28th like I said below.  I also confirmed that they do need to have someone there to sign paperwork for the packages. I will follow-up on the Friday before and hopefully they will also keep me in the loop. Please let me know if that week will work for you.

Thanks,

Hi Melanie,

So sorry that it didn’t work out! Seth said that he did leave them a voice mail, something must have gone awry. I’m glad that rescheduling works for you. I will be arriving home on the 5th of August so later on that week should be fine. If at all possible after the 6th would be best, but let me know what works for the shipping company. I will be traveling the Friday before so please try to connect with Seth again or we can organize it very simply be email anytime. I will have daily & consistent email access right up until the 1st August, then again from the 5th. Thanks for your patience with this and aplogies once again.

All the best,

Lenka

Hi Lenka,

That is the good thing about starting to pick things up early. There is room delays. No worries. The shipping company did let me know that they received the voicemails this afternoon. It seemed their system was messed up. And that in the past their system does go into a black hole with no voicemail. Arrrggghh. I have it on my calendar to follow up as the date gets closer.

Hi Melanie,

I’m just sending the sculpture as far as I know. There was a conversation about equipment being part of a possible sale but I haven’t heard anything more so was just planning to send the sculpture on loan.

Let me know if there’s a change of plan.

Thanks,

Lenka
