site95 is a non-profit organization established to present alternative exhibitions for emerging and established artists in temporary urban locations. Drawing upon available space in major cities, site95 will present over five projects per year, each extending up to two months. The impermanent sites create a platform for artists and curators to present innovative ideas in different contexts and allow viewers to experience new work not native to their location. Exhibitions will offer openings, educational talks and tours, screenings, and performances. site95 will also distribute an annual publication to include an archive of exhibitions and feature the online monthly journal with contributions by writers, curators, and artists.

How long has it been in existence?
Founded November 2011.

What was your motivation?
The mission of site95 is to present exhibitions in available spaces in different cities and feature an online journal with weekly artist features, reviews, interviews, and artist projects. site95 is meant to create a new platform for artists/curators/writers to present their ideas. In doing so, site95 initiates an exchange of these ideas and provides new opportunities for artists to show their work to different audiences.

We have a staff of 2. The Director (Meaghan Kent) and Associate Director (Sara Maria Salamone)

How are programs funded? (membership fees, public funding, sponsors, etc.)
Right now through public funding and sponsorship.  We are in the process of obtaining our 501c status and are applying for grants.

Who is responsible for the programming? (Curators, Directors, etc.)
The Director.

Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year.
5-6 exhibitions per year.  2-6 weeks per exhibition

What kind of events are usually organized?
Since January, we have had openings, artist talks, and a children’s craft event. This summer we are planning Dead in August, a summer exhibition in New York that will include: a block party event, screenings and performances.

How is your programming determined?
Through studio visits and submissions.

Do you accept proposals/submissions?
Yes. We accept proposals and submissions by artists, writers and curators via email:  info@site95.org

What is your artistic/curatorial approach?
Our projects are determined by the available space and vice versa. If we are offered a space we will determine a project for that space, whether it be a single artist, two to three person exhibition, or group exhibition. We also have specific projects that we are working on and looking out for the right space to house each particular exhibition.

What’s working? What’s not working?
It’s a very small staff so we are looking for contributing editors and interns to get involved and help with our projects.

What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community?
We hope to present new projects in each community that would not have typically been presented. For instance, in Miami we installed an exhibition of work by New York/New Hampshire based artist Sam Trioli. We were able to use an empty available space for an exhibition that would benefit the artist and general public.  The materials of the sculpture were native to New Hampshire so it was a wonderful opportunity to reassemble and present the sculpture in Miami. The artist was also able to create a wall mural in Miami which was a new creative opportunity and something he was able to do only because of the space and location we were given. What idea are you most excited about for the future?
Our upcoming exhibitions are incredibly exciting. Our next exhibition will open on April 7 at Launch F18 in New York. The exhibition will be a three person show with Russell Maycumber, Christina Pettersson, and Brian Wondergem. The April issue of the Journal will coincide with the exhibition and will have special features and artists projects.

We are in the process of planning Dead in August in New York. For Dead in August, there will be multiple venues including a group exhibition, solo projects, and a block party fundraiser.

We are also working on a large scale group exhibition called City Limits. City Limits is linked closely to the site95 mission and will present unique exhibitions in multiple venues in different cities including Miami, Washington DC and New York. Our first exhibition will be presented at Locust Projects, Miami in September 2012.
