VACATION! + St. Louis Events
Greetings from our extended summer vacation from new online posts. For the month of August, we have been working with St. Louis area organizations to present a public roundtable discussion and corresponding workshop focused around the topic of art criticism in the region. Please see the full information below. Additionally, we are revisiting the past year on Facebook and Twitter and working on some exciting new content to be posted starting again in September!
Flyover This: Art Criticism in St. Louis Public Roundtable Discussion
Saturday, August 10, 1 pm+
Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, 3151 Cherokee Street, Saint Louis, Missouri 63118
St. Louis, like almost every other city in 2013, does not have a full-time paid art critic. However, curator-critics, artist-writers, and professor-documentarians continue responding to the diverse manifestations of the visual art community in print, online, or simply between peers. Following Jessica Baran’s recent Riverfront Times article by the same name, “Flyover This” is a public roundtable aimed at bringing together a diverse range of art writers who live and work in the area to begin a conversation about art criticism in our city.
Roundtable guests will include Sarrita Hunn (Temporary Art Review), Stefene Russell (St. Louis Magazine), Matthew Erickson (freelance writer), Sarah Griesbach (St. Louis Beacon), Sam Korman (White Flag Project), among others. The discussion will be moderated by Jessica Baran (Riverfront Times/Fort Gondo) and James McAnally (Temporary Art Review/The Luminary). This event is free and open to the public.
Following this event please join us at BANK projects 4:30pm+ for the I-70 Cultural Exchange: a collaborative potluck and panel organized with Bread!KC to discuss and formulate stronger connections between the Kansas City and St. Louis art communities.
Writing Workshop: How to Write an Exhibition Review
Saturday, August 17, 1 – 4:30pm

Following from the “Flyover This” public roundtable, The Luminary Center for the Artsand Temporary Art Review are pleased to announce a workshop on the practice of critical art writing, focusing particularly on exhibition reviews. This workshop was created to provide what is sometimes a scarce opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the elusive practice of exhibition review writing and is ideal for artists, curators and critics, but no previous writing experience is required. All interested individuals are encouraged to attend. The session will be led by The Luminary Residency Program curator-in-residence Chris Fite-Wassilak and hosted at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts.
This workshop is free and open to the public.
To enroll please email residency@theluminaryarts.com.
