How is the project operated?
Night Club is operated as an independent exhibition space, directed by Olivia Coran and Matthew Steinbrecher.

How long has it been in existence?
Since September 2013.

Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project.
Two.

How are programs funded?
Part-time jobs and savings.

Who is responsible for the programming?
The two of us.

Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year.
This is our first year of programming, but by May 2014 we hope to have had between 5 and 7 exhibitions. As this is in a domestic space, the exhibitions will come down a week or so after the opening.

What kind of events are usually organized?
Due to the short duration of the shows, the exhibitions of mostly object-oriented work enter into somewhat of an event realm.

How is your programming determined?
The two of us keep a running list of people whose work we think needs to be shown now, and discuss over and over. We argue a lot.

Do you accept proposals/submissions?
We do not accept unsolicited proposals/submissions.

What’s working? What’s not working?
As with any team working together in close quarters, we regularly butt heads over minuscule details. This sort of friendly rivalry and love of working together can be exhausting (especially since we live with each other), but the partnership of creating a public platform for us to interact with work that we believe needs to be seen is extremely rewarding.

What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community?
A huge motivating factor for us to put Night Club in motion was feeling a lack of our own enthusiasm about a lot of what we were seeing in the city. There is an incessant need for spaces in Chicago to claim some sort of regional identity that felt both arbitrary and unhelpful to the work being shown. As products of being in art school, we firmly believe in what can grow out of communities of people interacting with art. However, we want to be able to bridge gaps of what is happening here and outside of the city, not allowing barriers of region or being in a domestic setting to stop us from making these connections. As far as Chicago is concerned, we look to spaces such as Julius Caesar, The Suburban, and younger upstart Queer Thoughts as models in their refusal to let these issues of marginality get in the way of showing provocative and meaningful work (in many instances the marginality makes it that much more rewarding).

What idea are you most excited about for the future?
We are very excited for our next exhibition opening this December with work by Dana Degiulio and Eliot Porter. It will be one to not miss.
