How is the project operated?
For-profit.

How long has it been in existence?
3 years

What was your motivation?
Being a Ceramic artist myself, I wanted to be able to showcase Contemporary Ceramics.

Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project.
2 owners, Chris Lyon and myself [Brett Binford].

How are programs funded?
Shows are funded through sale of art.

Who is responsible for the programming?
Brett Binford

Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year.
6 main exhibitions, and 12 back room shows.

What kind of events are usually organized?
We have first Friday receptions every month from 6-9pm.

How is your programming determined?
Shows are curated by Brett Binford.

Do you accept proposals/submissions?
We do – artists can email me directly.

What is your artistic/curatorial approach?
Generally, I create a theme and then select artists that fit and complement each other with both style and varying techniques. Most shows are group shows.

What’s working? What’s not working?
Our attendance and feedback from the clay community is overwhelmingly positive. Sales in Portland are tough but have been getting better and better. Growing a national audience has helped sales as well.

What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community?
We continually aspire to be the “clay hub” showing both emerging artists as well as well-established ones. Each show gives us an opportunity to educate the public about the spectrum of what can be done in clay.

What idea are you most excited about for the future?
We are excited about exploring limited edition series with artists along with having the National Ceramic Conference (NCECA) here in Portland in 2017. The event brings out over 5000 clay enthusiasts every year showcasing nearly 100 exhibitions in the host city.
