How is the project operated?
Artist-run.

How long has it been in existence?
Since March 2012.

What was your motivation?
We wanted to add another independent voice to the Kansas City community.

Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project.
There are three artists involved: Mike Erickson, Justin Gainan, and Erika Lynne Hanson

How are programs funded?
We personally fund all exhibitions and accept donations.

Who is responsible for the programming?
The three of us work collectively to decide on the programming.

Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year.
The length of exhibitions vary, but they are usually about a month. The number of programs per year is approximately 6.

How is your programming determined?
The three of us have meet to brainstorm and review submissions, then the specific programming is decided on as interesting topics or ideas arise.

Do you accept proposals/submissions?
Yes.

What is your artistic/curatorial approach?
1522 is an experimental endeavor exploring organic curating. Our model is that of the studio practice where one action, be it a random or well researched decision, informs the next.

What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community?
We hope to be a space where artists can realize projects that might be more experimental in nature, giving them the freedom to play without the pressures that can be associated with larger venues.

What idea are you most excited about for the future?
Currently, we are excited about the prospect of collaborating with artists and venues in various cities across the US and abroad — exposing the KC community to new audiences and vice versa.
