How is the project operated? How long has it been in existence?

S.H.E.D. Projects is an artist run space that has been in operation since September, 2011.

What was your motivation?
The motivation for the project was a double sided coin; on the one side taking advantage of an unused space behind our home and on the other side, offering a non-traditional, non-white cube exhibition site that challenges artists to accept site specificity as an integral part of their process.

Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project.
Who is responsible for the programming? How is your programming determined?
The programming is organized by its directors, Jonah Susskind and Emmy Moore.

How are programs funded?
Until now programming has been funded entirely out of pocket and through a kickstarter campaign launched in July, 2012.  Thanks to the support of Southern Exposure and the Alternative Exposures grant program, we will have outside assistance for 2013.

Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year.
Since we started, we have hosted 12 events including one off-site exhibition, an auction, a theater performance, and a panel discussion.

What kind of events are usually organized?
Most of the programming has been solo artist exhibitions that have been on view for any number of days ranging from one night only events to month long installations. We have hosted a couple of group shows as well.

Do you accept proposals/submissions?
S.H.E.D. Projects is currently accepting and encouraging proposals/submissions.

What’s working? What’s not working?
Projects that seem to incorporate or at least accept site specificity as a part of the creative process tend to do better here.

What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community?
S.H.E.D. Projects is a very raw, semi-outdoor space that offers a lot of flexibility and can accommodate a wide variety of projects. We are continuing to listen to feedback from our community of artists and neighbors and work towards maximizing our impact within our means. This winter we will be fixing the roof and adding a façade so that programming can be scheduled throughout the winter months. Our community continues to grow in support of this project and we are glad to be able to provide some sort of critical cultural center that remains accessible and adaptable.

What idea are you most excited about for the future?
Turning S.H.E.D. Projects into a temporary drive-in movie theater next summer.
